Camilleri Preziosi, in collaboration with FinanceMalta, joined over 4,000 industry experts at the Global ABS 2019 – the largest annual European structured finance gathering, which took place between the 11th and 13th June in Barcelona, Spain.
AFME and IMN’s three-day conference featured a total of 50 panels covering a range of topics including the role of securitisation across different asset classes, non-performing loans, new opportunities in European RMBS, ‘green labels’ for ABS deals, emerging tech in the securitisation sector, the transition away from LIBOR as a benchmark interest rate and, above all, the new regulatory framework for European securitisation. In this respect, the European Securities and Markets Authorities’ (ESMA) Executive Director, Verena Ross, delivered a keynote address on securitisation, in which the implementation of the new Securitisation Regulation was described as challenging amidst a number of uncertainties and the absence of a transitional period, but urged market participants to prepare for its implementation, stressing the importance of well-regulated securitisations.

– On day one, Malcolm discussed the current and expected continued uncertainty surrounding the applicability of the Securitisation Regulation’s reporting requirements to transactions having a cross-border element on a panel entitled ‘More than STS on the EU Regulatory Horizon’, which he shared with Marc Levine (Moody’s Analytics), Nick Shiren (Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP), Merryn Craske (Mayer Brown International LLP), Lisa Cargill (Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP), Anatoly Sorin (U.S. Bank Global Corporate Trust) and Alexandre Linden (BNP Paribas).
– On day three, Malcolm joined a panel headed ‘Tokenised Securities: What Does It All Mean?’ together with Michael Huertas (Dentons Europe LLP), Philip Rutovitz (TMF Structured Finance Services B.V.), Nick Cowan (GSX Group) and Michael Pinkus (Bitbond GmbH), which focussed on the tremendous potential of FinTech in shaping the future of the capital markets.
