Malta Yacht Registration & Yachting Tax: Your Gateway to EU-Flagged Ownership

Malta is one of the world’s leading yachting jurisdictions and home to the Malta Ship Registry, with over 1,000 superyachts registered under the Maltese flag. Strategically positioned at the crossroads of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, Malta combines full EU-flagged vessel status, a stable and transparent EU-compliant legal framework, and an English-speaking professional ecosystem — making it the sensible choice for yacht owners, operators, and investors.

Flexible registration and full-service support

Malta provides flexible registration pathways for pleasure yachts, commercial yachts, and bareboat charters, with a straightforward process and provisional registration also possible under the Maltese flag. Owners benefit from modern marinas and superyacht facilities, competitive registration fees and operating costs, and a comprehensive ecosystem of maritime lawyers, surveyors, and technical experts.

A competitive tax and VAT regime for yachting

Malta offers one of the most competitive VAT environments in Europe for yachting, with a standard VAT rate of just 18%, significantly lower than the 20–25% common across many other European jurisdictions.

Key tax highlights include:

  • VAT-efficient yacht leasing: Maltese rules permit the acquisition of a yacht through a leasing structure which has the effect of deferring VAT liability, with VAT being paid on periodic lease payments rather than the full acquisition cost upfront.
  • Use and enjoyment relief: VAT is charged only on the portion of lease payments corresponding to the yacht’s actual use within EU territorial waters, allowing lessors to align VAT with genuine EU-based use.
  • Reduced rate for short-term charters: As of 1 January 2024, qualifying short-term charters commencing in Malta benefit from a special reduced VAT rate of 12%.
  • Fast company set-up: Maltese yacht owning companies can be incorporated online, with the Malta Business Registry typically processing documents in just 4–8 working days.
