The European Commission has launched a website dedicated to providing guidance and information on the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”).
The GDPR comes into effect in May 2018 and will result in significant changes to the rules that one may need to abide by in terms of protection of personal data. Failure to comply with the GDPR could result in fines of up to 20 million euros or 4% of annual global turnover, whichever is the highest.
In regard to Malta’s implementation of the GDPR, the working document of the European Commission expert group on the GDPR states that an interministerial committee has been established and is responsible for the implementation of the GDPR. The police directorate has also reviewed the GDPR. It is expected that a finalised law will be implemented by the end of July 2018.
