CMA-CGM took over Malta Freeport in 2004. At the time, throughput was in the region of 1.3 million TEUs. Today, throughput is approaching the 2 million mark, and CMA-CGM plans to increase it to 3 million TEUs. To achieve this goal, a further investment of some €130 million is planned, and the workforce is expected to increase by 500 to 1,500 in total.
Henri Mizzi and Ron Galea Cavallazzi, who had acted for the Government in the privatisation process, advised on the grant of an option to CMA-CGM to extend the concession from 30 to 65 years once the investment is made.
